I started my undergraduate studiesat the online institute of Beiwai from March, 2014.I was attracted by this programme for the legendary fame and popularity of this university, which is well-known as the cradle of diplomats and also for offering the most languages studies here in China. However, upon considering the hardship and efforts needed, I did have experienced sufferings from worries and hesitations. Anyway, I failed to resist the temptation, and finally registered before the deadline.
At the beginning of my study here, I was always hoping to finishing it as quickly as I could, taking it as a countdown for acquiring the diploma and degree. However, thanks to that fact that each semester and the courses we were offered were fixed, I gradually calmed down to focus my interest and attention on learning, rather than being exam oriented. We had so many excellent teachers guiding us to learn the courses. So, I laid a solid foundation in English through the two years working on the courses. I have to mention that the curriculum of Beiwai is very practical. Besides the basic courses which help build up our basic skills, courses like Cross Culture Communication, English in a Changing World, Literature, and linguistics were also included in our curriculum to further develop our understanding of language theories and communication skills in cross cultural contexts. With the good basic skills we cultivated and formed, I managed to pass the thesis writing and the oral defence, which supported me to obtain the bachelor’s degree here eventually.
Soon after the joy, I chose to continue my study here with the graduate programme. It is truly difficult. I need to balance my job and study. At beginning, I was not used to the bewildering amount of reading assignments. The texts were so academic that I found myself reading at a ridiculously low speed. I called Miss Yang, our head teacher to check whether it is possible to give up and get my tuition back. She tried her best to persuade me to carry on and offered me a lot of encouragement and practical suggestions and help which helped defend me against the idea of retreat. Gradually, I began to notice my salient progress in reading comprehension and writing. More than that, I found that I have learned so much about my major, English education, by attending the splendid lectures offered by the professors, keep reading the recommended materials, and struggling to finish the home assignment. My progress was made in the process of overcoming the obstacles in my study. Now, I feel much more adapted to my graduate study here, and I’m sure that I’ll do better and better.
I really gained a lot of knowledge and English skills atBeiwai. However, the bigger harvest I attained here was the willingness to learn things and the good habit I has cultivated through experiencing the joy which I achieved after conquering all the challenges that I thought I could go through. Thank you, Beiwai Online! I will keep working hard to conquer you and reward you with my contribution to the society.
