The 2003 International Symposium on "Traditional Classroom and Internet: Enemies or Partners or Both" is to be held on Aug 14 (Thursday) -- Aug 15(Friday). It is co-sponsored by China National Research Center for Foreign Language Education, Beijing Foreign Studies University (BFSU), and Institute of Online Education of BFSU.
The symposium welcomes English educators and teachers who have been researching or practicing in classroom-based English learning/teaching mode and/or online/internet-based English learning/teaching mode to submit their research findings.
Comparative studies of the two learning/teaching modes are also welcome at the symposium.
Contributions will be mostly welcome, covering such topics as the following:
From learners' perspective
1. online and offline learning process analysis
2. conflict analysis between work and study and its resolution
3. online learning motivation or de-motivation
4. online and offline learning strategies
5. attitudes towards online learning
6. needs analysis for online learning
7. learners' problems in online learning
8. learner orientation package for online learning
9. self-assessment task design and online implementation strategies
10. online grouping and group learning strategies
11. online learning processing monitoring mechanism and strategies
From tutors' perspective
1. ways of integrating traditional classroom teaching with online learning
2. online learning and teaching task design
3. strengths and weaknesses in running online classes or tutorials
4. online tutorial strategies
5. online tutorial preparation process analysis
6. strengths and weaknesses of net-conferencing
7. tutorial meta-discourse analysis
8. information exchange channels and interactive patterns
9. ways of conducting collaborative online teaching
10. merits and/or demerits of marking online assignments
11. methods of online testing
12. online question-and-answer mechanism
13. tutor orientation training package - design and content
The Papers should meet the following guidelines:
* Be relevant to the symposium theme
* Strive to present up-to-date information
* Be about 4000 to 6000 words in either Chinese or in English
* Use APA style
Guidelines for abstracts:
* The deadline for submitting the abstracts is: July 15th, 2003, and the abstract should be about 200-word long.

Abstract(200 words)
Attention:
1.The paper should be between 4,000 and 6,000 words, and can be written in either English or Chinese. Each accepted paper is entitled to 15-minute presentation.
2.Please submit the electronic paper in floppy disk (word format) and one printed paper (A4 size) during the registration. The font size is Times New Roman (English) 12 or Song style (??)Make sure that the cover page of your paper contains your name, the topic of the paper, and your school affiliation.
3.Please return the receipt before 15th July to yeming@beiwaionline.com, or fax to Mr. Ye Ming at 010-68946651. The confirmation or invitation email or fax will be sent to the participants before 20th July.
